Hitting the wall…

09/29/2009 — ilashdesigns | Edit

Hitting the wall, is akin to banging your head on your desktop yes? I’ve hit the wall a few times this past week in my fiber work..and I now have a headache.  So..I think I probably was up in my sleep banging it on the desktop..feels like it anyways.

Adventures in dyeing..strong colors..ugh! Well, it brings about some rules…albeit not NEW rules..but pimplimentation of already determined rules..such as:  If it bleeds..it’s mine. Which is good and bad..you know! Mostly I feel frustrated…so then it rests until I can handle it again without that added emotion..or I just translate that into whatever I DO decide to make..then it becomes the project of frustration….so..forget that! It sits, and will become cleansed of all negativity, and recreated into something I will make for me.  But…the immediate good thing is…..I don’t stop with the bleed…I try again!!! Immediately..or sooner..because if I stop..then it wins and I fear I will lose my inspiration for the colorway..so I must continue!!! Gawl darnit…I WILL get it right! ..lol You ever feel that way? I think my Dad called it “bullheaded determination”…it’s a familial character..istic? flaw? yeah Dad, I am….moving right along….

And there’s my sweet husband..reminding me…it’s not “free” to learn.  And it’s not so much the loss of the $$$, it’s all the water I watch going down the drain!!!! How many resources am I going to use up here? ..lol  That’s what is frustrating.  If Uncle Joe only knew that the wool scarf he was wearing actually took 150 gallons of water  to just rinse the wool, he wouldn’t so casually sling it across the back of his old recliner!!!…but instead, lovingly fold it and caress it, and whisper sweet nothings to it as he places it next to it’s moth repellant and slides it into it’s cedar drawer!

So..we plug along.  I don’t like unnecessary waste. Who does? I know I’m not special.   Simple, easy, quick, treading lightly..is where I come from and will always reside.  I used to have a friend, who liked to humor me by telling me everything was “simple” (emphasis on the “mp”..lol)  and then he would follow that up with..”because I’m perfect” (emphasis on the “p”..lol)  It was funny and helped me re-frame my thinking sometimes.

I”m a virgo, – earth child, it’s where I get a lot of my energy. So if/when natural resources are wasted.. it drains me.  So I try to remind myself it can be “simple” and get real with “because I’m not perfect”!  Danged “earth child” she’s also a bit of a perfectionist…so it’s time to CHILL!

I hope everyone is enjoying fall!!! I am wearing my fingerless as I type..and have taken to wearing them to bed even! (ok just the right one..well? it’s the one that sticks out!!) …..I’m such a baby!   I don’t run my heat, but just barely…..throw on some flannels and dig out the sweaters..YIPEE!!!!

The Fiberlicious Give Away is coming to a close in a few days!  Get your comments in friends!!  That scarf needs a loving home!  I have tried weaving again this month with mixed results.  Barefoot weaver makes it look so fun!!!   It was fun for awhile, but I feel like I don’t have a third eye for it..like I think a weaver must have….so I’m back at the dye pots..where it’s WAY WAY fun for me! lol And my third eye is so busy! Have a great day folks!!! Look out for those walls! :) Ny.

It’s so fun to hear from folks! Thank you!!!

Kool-Aid Inspiration!

09/07/2009 — ilashdesigns | Edit

I was first intrigued to dye something when I saw a tutorial on dyeing with Kool-Aid.  The tut from knitty.com was helpful and encouraging so I had to share it here with you.    It appealed to me on many levels, most of which it was something I could do from my kitchen with common supplies!  It was just too fun to not try it! I hope if you are inspired you will check it out and try your hand at it one day! I would love to hear how you make out! Let me know! :) Ny.

New Colorways – Really? Really REALLY?

08/27/2009 — ilashdesigns | Edit

Is there really any “new” color combinations? Really? I really, really..think folks need to lighten up.  I get pretty annoyed by comments that suggest that someone “stole” a color combination.  I think anyone suggesting that somehow or another they have a claim on color combinations should really just get over themselves.  It is really exciting to put colors together that are appealing, but to honestly think that you were the first person to ever put those colors together in/on any medium is pretty pompous! Color belongs to everyone and has for a really, really long time.  Because you chose to use them together gives you no “rights” to them, implied or otherwise.  When I say something is in “My new colorway”..it only means that I am offering that color combination in my shop for purchase.  MY does not mean that I own it, or have any rights to it in any way.

I am still fairly new at this craft.  I know about Ravelry and I am a member there.  But  you will find very few posts by me or inter-actions with other members.  This is intentional on my part.  Because I am new at this craft.  Period.  I chose not to be influenced by others while I went about the hard business of learning.  I am a hands on type of learner and sometimes while in this process, someone making a comment or suggestion can (albeit with no ill intention) put my thinking in a box.  It is my character flaw, I own it.  I intentionally chose to independently learn my craft because I know myself that way and wanted to avoid it.  I want to maintain the free feeling I have associated with this craft for as long as possible.

Before I chose to pursue this endeavor I read as much as I could read about it, and I will always be open to learning more.  But people can be so full of bad advice and not even know it.  They just know, because that’s the way they were taught and that’s the way they’ve always done it and it has worked for them.  I learned pretty quickly that a lot of things I read were just not true.  For instance I read: Never wring wool!..It will felt it!…Heat does not felt wool, but wringing it will felt it.  Well bullhicky.  I have felted wool from heat, and I wring my wool with not one bit of felting, albeit, very carefully and not a lot, as I have felted it from too much handling and wringing too!  All of my wool is almost self drafting,  it is so soft and supple, it IS smoother than butter!  You can read my feedback from my store.  If I included in my item descriptions that I wring my wool, no one would buy it.   Bad information but I learned on my own how much is too much, and I have a big box of overcooked, felted wool to prove it.   The water temperature was too high = felt.  I also don’t use plastic wrap, or kettle dye, nor do I need an entire roll of paper towels to get through my work.  I do other successful things in this craft that I have never even read about anywhere.  I developed my processes on my own.  But the colors? They were already there, not MINE and not YOURS, never were, and never will be.   If we come out with similar color combinations, please, write it off to two great minds and get over yourself!  :) Ny.

**

After reflecting on this post all week, I feel I want to clarify a couple of things.  First of all I love Ravelry.  I support Rav all the way! VERY COOL! I love that there is such a huge online community dedicated to this and many other crafts and interests! I feel it is an invaluable resource and gathering.  I have spent time reading (when I have time to read for leisure, but as you can see from my shop, I don’t have enough time in my days to do to much!)  and will always encourage and support Ravelry.  Just to be clear.

I guess I’ll let the rest of it stand as is, nothing else seemed to bug me like this possible mis-interpretation did..gotta go! Have a great day! :) Ny.

Mitts in a Weekend

10/14/2009 — ilashdesigns | Edit

I had to share my first mitts.  Too bad I used acrylic yarn..but I was fraidy skeered that I would mess up and end up wrecking some handspun.  They were a lot of fun..and I learned a LOT, again.

First mittsFirst mitts

These were knit with circulars.  They were worked with the rs out. CO 28 on size 8. 2×2 knit and purl ribbing for (however long..I like longer cuffs..but next time I COULD count..lazy bird I am).  Switched to 2 circs. size 9, split the stitches. (should have 14 on each needle). When moving from ribbing to stockinette st.,  on the first stitch only, knit into the back loop (to prevent a hole) then  knit stitch for awhile.   My pattern said 3 rows..I lost track on the second mitt and had to punt. (it shows, but not enuf for me to care).   Begin increase rounds for the thumb.  Knit 2 rounds in between each increase round, until there are 9 stitches in between markers.  (increasing 2 stitches per round) Next round put the 9 thumb stitches on waste yarn to hold.  When continuing on to knit the palm  start by  adding  1 backwards loop cast on in the gap between thumb and palm part  (because if you count, ((haha count..I know..what a concept!) you will have only 13 stitches on one needle..ya need 14!) and  continue on knitting.  Start decreases going at least one (or two) rows past the little pinky finger. (that fits my hand, and if your mitt isn’t long enough..it pulls the thumb section up, the seam won’t ride where it’s supposed to..like wearing nylons hanging down too low in the crotch! ewww!) Start decrease rounds by  K2tog decreasing 4 stitches each round. (put decreases at the beginning and end of the 14 stitch row).  Decrease down until it’s too tough to knit, then graft together with a darning needle, pull the tail to the inside.

Thumb: using 1 circ.  pick up the 9 stitches with needle points toward the mitt.  Pick up however many stitches in the gap to close – then purl stitch rounds until about the middle of the thumb nail and start to decrease in purls – (this will put knit stitches on the rs of the thumb but check to make sure.. nobody likes to frog!) put the decreases at the beginning and end of the row that is on each needle (just like decreases above). Decrease until it’s too tough to knit then move stitches to darning needle, graft and pull the tail inside.

These are not perfect – by far.  But they are just fine by me.  This is a rough draft pattern just for my reference.  I put this together by finding 2 free patterns on the internet.  Hate to use the word “pattern” with all it’s inferred meanings.  It brings up the “REALLY REALLY” thing with me again.  I TOTALLY understand copyrighting patterns and the need for designers to get paid.  But uh, mitts have been being knit now for how long? and..I think the person that made the first mitt should get those copyright funds..but hey…I could be wrong. I’m just the new girl. :) Ny.

I been busy..

10/07/2009 — ilashdesigns | Edit

I’ve been having fun creating some baby items.  I have built two of them, but am still working out the kinks, so no pics yet! I hope to have a pattern to go with them…maybe.  I am in dire need of a  newborn photographer..if you are one, or you know one, please PLEASE contact me for an amazing deal on some TERRIFIC photo props.  These have been so much fun to create, but I need some test drivers!!!!!! HELP!!!!

I took some time to do some solid dying, and I still need to do more.  My next little job is dyeing up some more BFL baby dreams..for sale or spinning…we’ll have to see.

I drum carded up some black merino, and some silk that I tried to dye black..and it came out  beautifully multi-colored – mostly mahogany and a gorgeous grey color and some teddy bear brown silk, and some medium gray colored wool, I don’t remember what kind of wool it was. AND…I had carded some teddy bear brown with some dots of blue and red that got thrown in there too.    Then I spun it up and got 150 yards (I hoped enough for a pair of mitts).  But the silk was hard to spin into that merino..so my gauge seemed to vary quite a bit…we’ll see on that too.  It’s not blocking very nicely…I am anxious to see if I overspun it..or how soft and springy it will really be….! I have to remember what a bugger silk is for me to handle! I love the heathered dark colors, I love medium blue gray with black…next time I’d like to add some lighter grey and tan  and soft pink bamboo I think.  This set of mitts is supposed to be my dry run for my husband request.  He would like graduated grey to black..and I’m going to play with fiber composition to get it just right for him.  (i owe him these mitts as in BIGG time owe!)

And I dyed some more firestar..that is so fun and easy! Today is grocery shopping day and it’s rainy and cold.  Maybe I”ll get to put it off and dye the baby dreams.  Have a great day allya’all! :) Ny.
